We started the day with a lie in, no brekkie included today. Had to make do with English muffins, philly and smoked salmon.<\/p>\n

We then had a quick stop at Wynns Coonawarra. Treats in the bag as we headed for the caves.\u00a0 We hit the short road out to Naracoorte Caves in the Naracoorte Caves National Park. We took a tour like a good tourist, pix a plenty.<\/p>\n\n\n

The Naracoorte Caves are part of the 800,000 year old Naracoorte East Range. They are World Heritage listed, and one of the world\u2019s most important fossil sites. For half a million years the caves acted as pitfall traps and predator dens. Animals would fall in through a hole in the ground and not be able to escape. Bones collected \u2013 layer upon layer, year after year \u2013 creating a rich fossil record of the ancient animals that roamed the area. The fossil record covers several ice ages and the arrival of humans in the area (click for external link<\/a>).<\/p>\n

Then more wineries…. 12 bottles from various stops, the car will clink all the way to Melbourne.<\/p>\n\n\n

Our last part of the journey today was a quick scout around the town of Penola.<\/p>\n

Tonight we will sample the local hotel menu, then tomorrow we cross another state boarder into Victoria. Bendigo here we come.<\/p>\n\n\n
