A quick takeaway breakie down at South Beach in Freo, and we were on our way.
Day 1
A nice slow cruise down to Margs. Strange journey mixed with splatterings of rain and zig-zagging drivers using the freeway as their own personal racetrack.
Stopped off at Myalup Beach for a quick look. Long sandy beach for far as the camera could see. Large ridge of sand on beach was perfect place for fisherman to cast their lines far and deep into the ocean. This beach is driveable, meaning the 4WDs sat in the car park lowering their tyre pressure for ease of beach driving.
Arrived at Bunbury Farmer’s Market for food and goodies.
CLOSED Easter Sunday. Nothing more to say really.
Miracle. Found parking spot outside the Dunsborough Bakery. Town was heaving with state tourists, scootering kids weaving in and out of foot traffic. Gave the dogs a scare. Beef and Guinness pie hit the spot.
Next stop, and one of our favourites winerys, Happs (click for external link in new tab), on Commonage Road. Picked up some emergency supplies for the next two nights. Continued along road and found two new places for the future. A cellar door called Marq.
Apparently, Marq is a side business. The owner of Marq Wines (click for external link in new tab) also their chief winemaker, is the chief winemaker at Happs. Looking forward to trying that wine tonight.
Opposite Marq is another coffee roaster in the area. Commonage Coffee Co (click for external link in new tab) roasts their own beans on site. Sat in the corner of the Coffee Shop / roasting area lying in wait, is this monster of a roasting machine. Red and chrome with levers at all angles. Squatting on pallets in the other corner, piles of 70kg raw coffee beans all wrapped up in hessian bags, awaited their fate. Excelso Columbian Coffee Special Edition (Flor a Fruto). This coffee, as it should be, was “Direct Free Trade”.
We picked up a standard 250g packet of single origin beans (Purple Caturra) that had been lightly roasted. Ready for mornings back in Freo.
Headed off to the property and stopped off at Cowaramup for more essentials. Chocolate from Temper Temper (click for external link in new tab) and 4 more packets of 250g single origin beans (Ethiopian Yirgacheffe, Colombia Tolima, Costa Rica Tarrazu (Café Capris) and Peru Tres Estrellas). from Two Cracks Coffee (click for external link in new tab). Got to property at 2pm entry time. As usual, Ellensbrook Cottages (Jewel) (click for external link in new tab) was up to speck, clean, tidy and dead quiet.
Perfect.
Unpacked car, loaded up fridges and wardrobes and rested for while. Headed off to Prevelly to see the ocean and catch a sunset.
“Southside” was like a honeytrap to surfers off all ages. Beach had just enough wailing kids and barking dogs to be on the right side of balanced. Carpark and prom was scattered with locals chowing down on fish and chips, as well picnic platters, wine and beer platters.
Rivermouth was starting to empty of its beach goers, but still full of sunset chasers on the prom.
A great way to end a day.
