Finally – a chance to break away from the shackles of public sector work.
Highlights of the Week
A friday night escape down the highway. The Bunbury Farmer’s Market for essentials. Then a race to Cowaramup to pick up grog and ice. Lucky enough to see the orange tainted sunset sky, lit up like a slowly descending mist on the horizon.
2nd July – Saturday
Saturday is Prevelly day. A quick stop in Cow town for more essentials. Long blacks from Two Cracks Coffee. Then the ten minute drive to Surfer’s Point at Prevelly. A fantastic blue sky, cloud free with a tinge of coldness hanging in the air. Surf lucky day as well. First time for surfers at “The Box”, “Bombie” and “Boat Ramps” altogether, as well as first time seeing “The Box” and “Boat Ramps” being surfed ever.
Coffee consumed, we headed for extra supplies from Margs. With an abundance of winerys, grog shops are only good for local beers. Local winerys provide us with ample choices of Western Australian wine, with monies going direct to the winery. A quick local stop landed us at Cape Grace for a trio of reds.
A lovely 2018 Shiraz for the night.
Off to sunset at Gracetown North Point lookout for a average (as it is sometimes).
3rd July – Sunday
Coffee and views at Prevelly. Yet again, great waves at The Box and Southside Mainbreak.
4th July – Monday
Another quiet day today. Spent the day shopping at wineries and coffee roasters. For lunch, we went slumming for junk food at The Eagle Bay Brewing Company.

5th July – Tuesday
Spent a cruisy day shopping for more wine (somebody has to do it), coffee and a new location. Dropped in at Firetail Wines to checkout their latest vintages. The new sparkling won’t be ready until our next visit, so with luck, 72 month aged bubbles.
Stopped by a new coast location. See it many times on the maps, and online references, but never kind of gotta round to visiting.
Contos
Conto’s is a large, sheltered and well-appointed campground nestled within shady peppermint woodland, close to Conto Beach and other National Park attractions. Conto’s Campsite has 116 camp sites nestled amongst the coastal peppermint woodland. The campsite has a range of site types, catering for tents through to sites suitable for large caravans and camper trailers. For our next visit, we will be checking out Conto Springs and Conto’s Beach for surfing.
6th July – Wednesday
Spent the day in Gracetown.
While South Point isn’t a great wave, it also isn’t terrible. South Point is located directly across the bay from North Point, and is overlooked by the small township of Gracetown. It’s a full/lacklustre left-hander which slowly rolls down the point. When surfing out here don’t race the wave just stay close to the white water. The surf is best on a moderate to large swell. South Point also offers some protection from a southerly wind – one of the few surf spots in the area that does. If you’re anything like myself and big North Point scares the pants off most, at least you can get a wave at South Point without putting your life on the line.

North Point is an extremely heavy right-hand reef break. It is located inside of Cowaramup Bay and is overlooked by the small township of Gracetown.

Cobblestones in the Margaret River Area is an exposed reef break that has consistent surf and can work at any time of the year. The best wind direction is from the east northeast. Groundswells are more common than windswells and the ideal swell direction is from the south southwest. A reef breaks right. When the surf is up, it can get quite busy in the water. Beware of rips, rocks and sharks.

7th July – Thursday
Easy last day today. Spent the day working our way up north to Cape Naturaliste. After a late breakie, and quick packing away, we hit the road to pick up our final supplies of wine and chocolate. Caught some early surfers at “Grunters” before our trip up Caves Rd and Yallingup.

After “Grunters”, we popped into Smith’s Reef at Smith’s Beach (Yallingup). First time sighting of surfers on the reef on this grey day. Grabbed lunch (from pie shop) and headed up to Cape Naturaliste to check out a couple of new beaches. Windmills Beach and “Other Side Of The Moon”. More about these two and others on our next break down south.
Caught a sunset before heading off for food.

Finished the night up with “orange” food at the local Fish Pub (Clancys).
