A foodies day today. Off to wineries, nougat and cheese producers.
Day 06
Bettenays
Using traditional processes and sourcing the finest of ingredients, be it from their very own property or fruit and nuts of the highest quality from Margaret River and select sources around Australia.
In 1988 we set up a vineyard and winery on their Margaret River property. After 18 years of making premium wines we decided there was another product we also had a passion for and this is where the nougat began.
Sourcing the finest fruit and nuts as well as local honey, Bettenay’s Margaret River Nougat is the ultimate moreish treat. All the nougat is made in small batches and each bar is hand wrapped and crafted. Ther bars contain all natural ingredients and have no added preservatives.
Although based on a French style, the nougat is made using a secret family recipe and is a style of its own, a uniqueness unlike any other.
Robert Otley
Robert Oatley Wines was founded as a family winery in 2006 by the late Robert (Bob) Oatley AO BEM. Today the family business is led by Bob’s eldest son Sandy Oatley who, together with his father, brother and sister, planted the first Oatley family vineyards in the late 1960’s.
We were not here for the wines. Just the statue that stands aloft the lake as you drive in.
Woody Nook Wines
The land now occupied by Woody Nook Wines’ single vineyard estate was formerly home to a sawmill and sleeper cutters. In 1978 Jeff and Wynn Gallagher purchased the property with a vineyard in mind and began the arduous task of clearing and preparing the land. The first cuttings were planted in 1982 and the first crush took place in 1987, the first winery building having been built the year before.
Yallingup Cheese
The Yallingup Cheese Company produces a range of small batch, hand crafted Goat and organic cows milk cheeses. Theye are passionate about working with local dairies to craft artisan cheeses and are fortunate enough to have Scapegoat Dairy and Margaret River Organic creameries as their main suppliers. They receive three batches of cow milk and one batch of goat milk per week and all of the milk received is used for cheese production that day, which helps preserve the fresh milk flavours.
GraceTown Lefthanders
Head south out of the Gracetown area towards the local tip. At the end of the bitumen, is a graded track off to the right. Follow it to the end, there is a bitumenised car park with toilets (an indication of how popular this place is). Can’t miss the spot.
Carpark overlooks the ocean with a good view down to lefties (About a 700 metre walk South). Lots of wave options along this coast. Check ’em all out.
GraceTown North Point Sunset
North Point North Point is an extremely heavy right-hand reef break. It is located inside of Cowaramup Bay and is overlooked by the small township of Gracetown.
