Our first day in Albany.

A little bit about Albany.

Albany (Nyungar: Kinjarling) is a port city in the Great Southern region in the Australian state of Western Australia, 418 kilometres (260 mi) southeast of Perth, the state capital. The city centre is at the northern edge of Princess Royal Harbour, which is a part of King George Sound. The central business district is bounded by Mount Clarence to the east and Mount Melville to the west. The city is in the local government area of the City of Albany.

Albany’s main industries are tourism, fishing, timber (wood chips) and agriculture. From 1952 to 1978, whaling was a major source of income and employment for the local population.

Albany Wind Farm

The Albany Wind Farm is one of the most spectacular and largest wind farms in Australia. The wind farm walk offers spectacular views of the eco-friendly turbines along the Torndirrup Peninsula at Sand Patch.

Emu Point

The beach is 400 m long extending from the eastern training wall to the Emu Point marina. The beach receives no ocean waves, only low winds waves from the harbour. It faces north into the harbour and is fronted by 200 m wide shallow tidal sand flats grading into seagrass meadows.

Middleton Beach

The beach is 4 km long, faces the southeast and receives low refracted waves. Waves are usually 1 m or less and maintain a low energy beach fronted by a continuous shallow bar, usually free of rips.The southern end is called Middleton Beach, which is an eastern suburb of Albany and site of the Albany Surf Life Saving Club.

Sand Patch Peak

Sand Patch Peak is a hill in Western Australia and has an elevation of 137 metres. Once a popular surfing and fishing beach stretching 17 km from Sharp Point to Hanging Rock, Sand Patch is now a remnant of its former self. Receiving the full force of the southwest swell, much of the original beach has eroded, leaving a collection of disjointed rocky out­crops and very little sand.
